In the beginning of the 20th century, there were six groups of more than 500 people of the Thao residing around Sun Moon Lake. One of them is the Kankwan Group, which was forced to move to where the Baraw-baw Group currently reside. That was in the 1930s when the Japanese built a dam by the lake.
