The original description reads: “Since they don’t have clocks, savages get up when they hear the crowing of cocks. They finish breakfast before sunrise, and go to bed at around 7 or 8 when the light grows too dim, the source of which is burning pine branches. They put salt in water to make food, with greens or shoots to supplement millet, broomcorn millet, taro, or rice. Fish or animal flesh is only served on special occasions or when treating special guests.
