The aborigines in Hengchun were called “Hengchun savages” in the Qing Dynasty. In the late Qing, the authorities divided Hengchun by Fenggang Harbor or Lion’s Head River into two parts, and the aborigines were thus divided into “Hengchun Upper Savages” and “Hengchun Lower Savages”. After Japan took over Taiwan, the names were still used, but they were later changed to the Caqovqovoli Group, meaning the group of people that belongs to the Caqovqovoli Group.
