The original description reads: “Men and unmarried women have tattoos on their foreheads and chins, and married women have tattoos extending from their mouths to their ears. But this bad custom is forbidden now.” The photo was taken by Mori Ushinosuke in January, 1915. The scene shows some Atayal girls of the Tarown Group of the Truku Group (in Renai Township of Nantou County) getting facial tattoos.
