The Taipei Botanical Gardens were formerly known as the Taipei Nursery and are over one hundred years old. After the Japanese took control of Taiwan, in 1896 a nursery was started on an empty plot of land outside of Little South Gate. Saplings were brought in from Japan and around Taiwan, and the nursery was used as a place to promote plant education. In 1921, the nursery officially changed its name to the Taipei Botanical Gardens. It is currently under the jurisdiction of the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute.
The picture shows what Lotus Pond looked like during the Japanese occupation. The trees around the pond were already mature and lush at the time, creating a beautiful reflection in the water.
