The Palace Museum was established in 1933 in Nanjing. In fall of 1948, the government relocated to Taiwan, and rare items in the Palace Museum collection were shipped in batches to the island. In the beginning, items were shipped to a storage location in Beigou, a small village in Wufeng, Taichung. However, due to limited space in Beigou, as well as the poor road conditions there, the museum was limited in what it could do. Consequently, it was moved to its current location near Waishuang River in Taipei in 1965.
This picture is of the museum at Beigou in 1957. After it was relocated to Taipei, the site at Beigou was renovated into Taiwan Studio City. The 9/21 earthquake severely damaged buildings in the City, leading to its closing. The site is now abandoned and desolate.
