The Qingliu Tribe of the Wushe Area in Nantou

NCL Special Collection / Wang Bi-yun / 1931 / 16.7×12.1cm / 《Visual Feast》

Following the Wushe Incident of 1930, the Japanese moved the aborigines of the Wushe area to Kawanakajima above Wushe and the upper part of the Beigang River (the modern Qingliu tribe at Huzhu Village in Renai Township) as a way to increase control of the mountain regions. This picture was taken by a Japanese geologist hiking up to Mount Hehuan. Near the upper reaches of the Zhuoshui River one can see aboriginal houses. Vegetation along the mountain path includes the Taiwan Cherry, and in the distance a portion of Qilai Mountain is viewable. There is also the Survivors of the Wushe Incident Memorial.
