An Unconventional Summons in Hsinchu Park

After Japan took control of Taiwan, they actively expanded military preparations before launching a war. Taiwanese youth were also subject to being drafted and trained.
The picture shows a group of entry-level policemen during the colonial period. To keep them on high alert and in top physical condition, the Japanese police bureau would hold irregular summons (similar to today’s muster recalls). This would train them to react at the most unconventional times and situations. When summoned they would have to wear their formal uniforms and have with them a linen rucksack; there were also very strict requirements for their mosquito nets and canteens.
