The Pacific War ended in 1945 with the defeat of the Japanese army and their surrender on August 15 of that year. On October 25, the Chinese theater held a formal ceremony of surrender in Taipei, where Governor-General Andō Rikichi (1884-1946) represented the Japanese troops in Taiwan in surrendering to the Chinese delegate Chen Yi. After the repatriation process for the Japanese was completed, Andō was arrested in his residence on April 13, 1946 for war crimes. Also arrested at the time was Military Chief of Staff Isayama Haruki.
Andō was made the commanding general of the Taiwan Army in 1941 and was appointed at the 19th Governor-General in December of 1944. Little did he know that he would become the last one to fill this post.
