Zhongshan North Road, Section 3 in Taipei

NCL Special Collection / Liu Shu-mei / 1950-1960 / 10.1×6.4cm / 《Visual Feast》

Zhongshan North Road was originally built during the Japanese occupation to lead to the Taiwan Grand Shrine and was called Chokushi Avenue. After the war, it was the road that Chiang Kai-shek traveled to and from the Office of the President, as well as the main road for transporting foreign dignitaries. This caused the bustling road to be enveloped in an air of mystery. From this photo taken before 1963, one can see a wide three-lane road separated by pedestrian islands. At the time, not many people owned their own cars and thus the road seems quite large and empty. Traffic is limited to buses and black cars of those in power. However, now the veil of mystery has already been taken from Zhongshan North Road, and the three-lane road is filled with traffic day and night.
