The original caption indicates that this is a photo of the Atayal in Hualian, but Mori Ushinosuke took a similar photo in September 1905 at the same location but from a different angle. He recorded that this skull shelf belonged to Ueno Group in Hengchun and claimed that the tube-shaped item standing upright in front of the skull shelf was a cannon they had stolem from the Qing Army. The Ueno First Group is a group subordinate to the Caqovqovoli Group of the Paiwan in Hengchun Peninsula.
