NCL Special Collection / Du Zhe-yu / [n.d.] / 11.3×7.9cm / 《Visual Feast》

The old Taichung Library was located on Ziyou Road, Section 2. Today the building houses the Taichung branch of the Taiwan Cooperative Bank. The library was completed in 1929 and during the colonial period was known as the Taichū Prefecture Library. After the war, its name was changed to the Taichung Library. In 1972, the library was relocated to a new facility on Jingwu Road and the old building was sold to the Taiwan Cooperative Bank.
This graceful, two-story building was built in an L shape, with the walls covered with brick and stone veneer. The lines are simple, and decorative additions few, placing it in the realm of architectural eclecticism. It is one of the most notable libraries built in the colonial era.
