During the Taiwan Nationalist Movement, the Taiwan Cultural Association was established in 1921 and functioned as the core of the movement. In an effort to awaken a national consciousness and to fight for political rights of Taiwan citizens, the cultural association held many speeches throughout Taiwan. Under this influence, many other groups were formed, including the Wufeng I-sin Association. The I-sin Association had as its aim the promotion of Chinese studies and Chinese education. The men and women who participated were incredibly passionate and active. This picture is a group photograph taken in 1932 of those studying in the Chinese Literature Research Association. In the center of the first row wearing a traditional long gown is Lin Mosei, Taiwan’s first person to receive a Ph.D. and former dean of the College of Humanities at National Taiwan University. To his left is Lin Hsien-tang. To his right is the renowned poet from Lugang, Zhuang You-yue.
