The Dongmen Market in Hsin-chu was established around 1900 and was originally called the Shinchiku Market. It was started by a group of private Japanese and Taiwanese businessmen. In 1910, it was recalled by the local government, Shinchiku Chō, and was made a government-run market. In 1930, it was renamed the Dongmen Consumer Market of Shinchiku. “Dongmen” continued to be used from postwar times until the present. It is Hsin-chu City’s oldest market.
This picture was taken during the 50th anniversary of the market. The two-story structure has a three-tiered archway, revealing how large the celebration was. The archway has on it “Promote national goods; get back our rights.” However, it is unclear what the meaning behind these words is.
