NCL Special Collection / Chen Bo-xin / around 1935 / 15.4×11.2cm / 《Visual Feast》

The Presbyterian Church first came to Taiwan in late Qing. Most of these churches in the south were from England, whereas in the north they were mainly Canadian. This led to a north-south split in Christianity. It was not until 1951 that both sides came together to form the Taiwan Presbyterian Church.
The Shuanglian Church in Taipei was started in 1913. It was originally named the Niupuzhuang Exegesis Center. Most of the congregation was comprised of the medical staff and patients at the nearby Mackay Memorial Hospital. In 1917, the name was formally changed to the Shuanglian Church. It is now almost one hundred years old, and its congregation has grown and spread. This picture is of the Shuanglian congregation welcoming the coming of missionaries for a large meeting. It was taken around 1935.
