A View of Shuanglian Street in Taipei

NCL Special Collection / Liu Shu-mei / 1950-1960 / 10.2×6.5cm / 《Visual Feast》

Before the Tamsui railway line was constructed, the Shuanglian area was a relatively remote place where young shepherd boys let their cows graze. Because two farming ponds are connected there, the place is called shuanglianpi (the connected bank). In 1901, the Tamsui line was constructed and Shuanglian became one of the stops. Since it was the closest to the wholesale market in Twatutia, it became the goods transit station for Shilin, Beitou, and Guandu. All of this led to the development of a bustling market near Shuanglian station. This picture shows people and vehicles moving this way and that, with storefronts on either side. It’s almost as if one can still hear the bustling sounds of the street.
